I can spend hours animating but I feel totally unable to work out a proper lighting. I am grateful there are people out there with an infinite patience and great talent willing to help. People like Thibaud Floutier (lighting intern at Framestore CFC), who, after seeing the lousy renders I was doing for my final project decided to give me a hand in such a task.
Here you can see my disgusting and crappy render, after ten minutes tweaking the lights:

And this one is Thibaud's work:

yeah. it´s a pain is the a.... specialy if you have a old computer that take dozens of minutes just to render a test.
i can see he´s donne nice specular and anbient light. it´s cool. just the floor looks to brighht fot me.
are you using a blin as a texture in the body, cos it´s shinning.

Your lucky you have someone to show you these things. Hope life is treating you well man.
what's up Doc? You know what your render wasn't that bad and just like DMCA I find the floor way to bright for my liking on the new render. Right now it is soo bright that it almost distracts from the main action. Yes it looks like a real Boxing ring but that s not what we should be after when doing film making.
Also, lighting is one thing but having the correct shaders is very important too and like DMCA said again, the guy is shinny, just as shiny as his outfit. What I would do instead is to have a blinn shader for the outfit and a lambert for the body.... or the opposite ;-) during a fight you are bond to be a bit sweaty.
But anyway it would look nice if you had a contrast of shaders between the skin and the outfit.... contrast... ahhhh the same concepts always come back when talking about art.
And what's up with Framestore then? I think you have finished your interneship now, haven't you?
thanks for your comments and advice, fellows. i agree with all of you. but oliver, you know that my render was crap! you are right about the ring, it is really shinny but i think it looks better on my final thing. anyway, i handed it in yesterday and now it is part of the past. i won't touch it again!
